About the Event
June 21 is International Yoga Day, the summer solstice and it's also National Indigenous Peoples Day. That sounds like we should celebrate!
Join us, outside on the yoga deck behind Bala studio to shop, socialize and try a cold plunge or mini sound healing session. Participate in all or some of the events. Shopping and social starts at 6:00pm. Local makers and vendors will be on-site and details to be announced as we get closer to the event.
Details on sound healing:
Terry Redmond will be here offering up mini sound healing sessions. Sessions will be 15 minutes and held inside the studio. She's charging $15 for a session and donating half of that to the Barrie Native Friendship Centre.
Details on cold plunges:
We are so lucky to be joined by Marsha and Kenneth of Polar Wolves Canada this year. They will guide us through a cold immersion experience, complete with movement, mindfulness and support to jump in the cold water. There are so many mental and physical benefits to cold adaptation. Come give it a try with support from professionals and your friends. Hard things are done easier with support.Â
Cold plunges will happen in 2 sessions. One at 6:30pm and one at 7:30pm. Bring a swimsuit (or whatever you are comfortable to wear in the water) and a towel.Â
Details on the clothing swap:
-Go through your closests to find clothing and accessories you don't wear. Bring them to the studio to donate
- All items must be clean, without stains or rips (You know, the worn out type, not the stylish type ha)
-Yoga clothes, dress clothes, every day clothes, purses, hats are all welcome
-no swimwear, PJs or underwear please
-Drop off clothing any time from June 1 - 20 when you come to class or make arrangements with Jessy to drop off your things
-Exchange each item of clothing you dontate for a ticket
-Tickets are redeemable at the event. The value of a ticket is one item of your choice in the swap
-You can purchase tickets without donating items for $5 each (read: buy any item of clothing for a $5 donation)
-All money raised from the clothing swap will be donated to CONTACT in Alliston
-Left over items will be donated to The Clothes Line in Alliston. The Clothes Line is run by CONTACT Community Services, a non-profit organization in New Tecumseth
The event is also in support of the Barrie Native Friendship Centre (BNFC). The BNFC is a gathering place for health, legal, cultural and community support for all Indigenous people in our area. They also offer outreach and education for the general public. As this studio sits on Anishinabee traditional lands, let's all want to recognize that this land would not offer us the same bounty without the generations of caretaking by Indigenous people and let's use this as an opportunity to amplify Indigenous voices, stories and culture.Â
So come out and join us for community fun, shopping and to try some alternative healing.
